Our Cultural Heritage

Types of Cultural Heritage

Tangible cultural assets consist of elements such as paintings, books, sculptures, inscriptions, monuments and mosques. Although they seem unforgettable, to me they are actually forgettable. If we don't learn their stories, like why they were made, for whom they were made, and how they are made, these legacies are easily lost. And we only hear their names here and there, but we don't remember them at all. I can give the Clock Tower, Sultan Ahmet Mosque, Evliya Çelebi's Travel Book and Göktürk Addresses as examples from Turkey. Gülçin BSBL

Material cultural assets consist of such elements as paintings, books, sculptures, inscriptions, monuments, mosques. Although they are known as historical monuments, I don't think he cares that much. If we don't find out their story, we won't understand the purpose of it. We need to know who it was made for, by whom it was made, and what contributions these made works have made to us.It's not enough if we just hear their names. As an example, from Izmir; Clock Tower, Elevator, Pamukkale Traventers, Ephesus Ancient City, Chestnut Sunday Mosque. Nazlı Narlıdere

Second beautiful castle is Malbork Castle . This castle is the most powerful medieval fortress in Europe. The construction of the castle was started by the Teutonic Knights in the 13th century. Over the next centuries, when Malbork became the capital of the Teutonic Order, the fortress was significantly enlarged by adding the Great Refectory and the Grand Master's Palace. The castle in Malbork has impressive red brick walls as well as a strip of defensive walls from towers and gates. Visitors can admire the ingenuity of medieval builders while watching an interesting and quite innovative for those times central heating system. The enormous size of the Castle is best seen and photographed from the side of the Nogat River, but also when visiting the complex, you cannot stop admiring the majestic beauty of the fortress and its extraordinary power. The Castle Museum offers many attractions for visitors, including several exhibitions with old weapons, amber, porcelain and faďence products, and arts and crafts. peter sp15

Białowieża Forest in POLAND Białowieża Forest is a large forest complex, including extensive old-growth forests, on the border between Poland and Belarus. It is an example of the Central European mixed forests terrestrial ecoregion, and a range of associated non-forest habitats, including wet meadows, river valleys, and other wetlands. The area is home to the largest free-roaming population of European bison, as well as wolf, lynx, and otter. The Polish part of the site was first added to the list in 1979. The part in Belarus, Belovezhskaya Pushcha, was added in 1992, while the year 2014 saw a large extension of the protected area.

POLISH WIELICZKA SALT MINE The areas around Wieliczka and Bochnia contain deposits of rock salt, which has been mined since the 13th century. Hundreds of kilometres of tunnels in both mines also contain works of art, such as sculptures carved in salt and underground chapels. The mines illustrate the development of mining technologies in Europe. Wieliczka was first listed individually in 1978. Eleven years later, it was added to the list of World Heritage in Danger due to the threats posed to the sculptures by the humidity. Following a conservation program that saw the installation of efficient dehumidifying equipment in the mine, it was removed from the endangered list in 1998. A minor boundary modification took place in 2008. The Bochnia Mine was added in 2013.

Błędowska Desert- The desert area is one of the most interesting and unique areas in Poland in terms of nature. The temperate climate is not conducive to desertification of the area, so extensive sands covered with sandy vegetation are therefore a phenomenon in this part of Europe. Human activity was conducive to the creation of a desert stretching over an area of over 30 square kilometers. As a result of drawing a large amount of subsurface water and massive logging (already taking place in the Middle Ages), nearly 150 square kilometers of sand were uncovered. Until today, most of them have been overgrown with vegetation and trees, but there are still large dune embankments between the forest complexes.

The Hel Peninsula is one of the most interesting regions of the Polish Baltic coast. It is a narrow, 34 km long spit, created by a sea current flowing from the east along the coast, carrying sand from the bottom. The unique location of the Spit means that when visiting one place, we encounter two different landscapes - on the side of the open sea, typically maritime and almost inland on the side of the bay.

The term ‘cultural heritage’ has changed content considerably in recent decades, partially owing to the instruments developed by UNESCO. Cultural heritage does not end at monuments and collections of objects. It also includes traditions or living expressions inherited from our ancestors and passed on to our descendants, such as oral traditions, performing arts, social practices, rituals, festive events, knowledge and practices concerning nature and the universe or the knowledge and skills to produce traditional crafts. While fragile, intangible cultural heritage is an important factor in maintaining cultural diversity in the face of growing globalization. An understanding of the intangible cultural heritage of different communities helps with intercultural dialogue, and encourages mutual respect for other ways of life. The importance of intangible cultural heritage is not the cultural manifestation itself but rather the wealth of knowledge and skills that is transmitted through it from one generation to the next. The social and economic value of this transmission of knowledge is relevant for minority groups and for mainstream social groups within a State, and is as important for developing States as for developed ones.(https://ich.unesco.org/en/what-is-intangible-heritage-00003)
